Wamena is a district in Jayawijaya, Papua province,
Indonesia, as well as the capital of the district. In Wamena, there are
airports that connect the region Jayawijaya, with Jayapura, and other division
of the District, such as Lanny Jaya district, Yahukimo, Tolikara and others. Wamena
is the only largest city located in the central highlands of Papua. Wamena is
derived from Dani consisting of two
words Wa and Mena, which means Pig Tame. In
contrast to other major cities in Papua, Timika, Jayapura, Sorong, Merauke,
Wamena is a paradise and the pearl has not been touched in the interior of Papua's central highlands. The town is situated in the valley of Baliem, and
fed by rivers and flanked Baliem Jaya wijaya mountains in the south has a height
of about 1800 meters above sea level.
Wamena town still has the fresh air and
away from air pollution like other big cities in Indonesia. Characteristics of
the Earth Papua inhabited by dark-skinned natives, making Wamena dubbed as black pearls. If in Raja Ampat is famous for the sea, then Wamena is famous with culture and the
natives. As with most towns in the mountains of Papua, the city is developing
in accordance with the
pattern of development around airports. The town is much
visited by local and foreign tourists, were very beautiful and still fresh. Especially in the implementation of the Papuan cultural festival, which was
held in the district Wosilimo, the city is overrun by tourists both local and
foreign.
